International visitors barred from Tokyo Olympics

The Impact of Coronavirus on the Tokyo Olympics

The coronavirus pandemic has already had a major impact on the Tokyo Olympics, and it looks like things are only going to get worse. First, the games were postponed from 2020 to 2021. Then, it was announced that spectator numbers would be limited in order to prevent the spread of infection. And now, international visitors have been banned entirely.

This last bit of news is especially troubling, as it was always assumed that foreign visitors would play a major role in generating revenue for the event. In fact, one estimate suggests that banning international spectators could cost the Games $800 million in ticket sales alone. And that’s not even taking into account potential sponsorships and other forms of revenue.

At this point, it is still unclear how all of this will affect the future of the Tokyo Olympics. Will the Games go on as planned? Or will they ultimately be cancelled? Only time will tell.
